If you have had a dental crown placed before, you probably remember the weeks-long process that involved multiple visits to the dentist and needing to “baby” a temporary crown while you waited for your new crown to be made. At Smiles4OC in Costa Mesa, CA, that wait time has now been reduced to as little as an hour with same-day dental crowns.

How are same-day dental crowns different from traditional crowns?

The traditional dental crown process generally requires at least two visits. In the first visit, your tooth is shaped in preparation for the crown and dental impressions are taken—generally with a putty that is placed in your mouth. A temporary crown is then placed while you wait for the laboratory to make your new crown, and when it is ready a few weeks later, you come back in to have the crown placed.

With same-day crowns, this process is condensed into one visit and uses the latest digital dental technologies, saving you time and stress. After prepping your tooth for the crown, we use the advanced iTero Intraoral Scanner to take digital impressions of your teeth, which are more comfortable and precise than the traditional putty impressions. This information is then used by the iTero mill to create your crown from a block of porcelain—right while you wait comfortably, catching up on emails, reading a book, or taking a short rest.

Benefits of single visit crowns

We have invested in the iTero milling technology because it offers our patients many benefits:

  • Time savings: with today’s hectic schedules, being able to complete your treatment in just one visit frees up your schedule to do the things that matter most to you
  • Precision: digital impressions provide a more detailed picture of your teeth, and their integration with the milling machine leads to a better fit for improved results
  • Natural-looking: your crown is milled from modern dental porcelain, which looks natural and is very durable and long-lasting
  • Educational for patients: using the digital images of your teeth that the iTero scanner takes, we can show you exactly what is happening in your mouth and use the images to answer any questions you have about your oral health or treatment plan
